The history of Gatlinburg is just as interesting as the town is today. Although the town hasn’t always been called Gatlinburg, it’s always been a great place for families to spend time together and enjoy the views of the mountains. During the 19th century, Gatlinburg was known as White Oaks Flats because of the numerous white oak trees that blanketed the area. There are many stories describing how Gatlinburg got its name. Each story includes a preacher, Radford Gatlin opening a general store in 1854 in the White Oaks Flats community. Stories claim that the first post office opened in his store, so the town changed the name to Gatlinburg. It is said that he was eventually banished from the area, and the town never changed its name.

Today, Gatlinburg is one of the best places to stay when you are looking for a relaxing mountain getaway. Surrounded on three sides by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Gatlinburg sits next to approximately 600 miles of hiking trails, perfect for families looking to experience the great outdoors.
