Faces of the Past at the Paul Murray Gallery

Paul Murray painting near our condos in Gatlinburg TNArtist Paul Murray has said that his job is to “capture the last flicker of light of the past, the character and depth of the people of yesterday”.  Born in Canada, Murray became fascinated by the people living in Southern Appalachia and has dedicated his life to capturing their lifestyle and identity in breathtaking portraits. Located just around the corner from our condos in Gatlinburg TN, the Paul Murray Gallery is a must see attraction for art lovers visiting the Smokies.

Paul Murray

Growing up in Ontario, Paul Murray was always more interested in art and nature than school. Murray dropped out at age 13 and spent his days making farming tools, drawing, painting and reading about the mountain people of Appalachia. The isolation and rich heritage of rural life in the Smoky Mountains inspired Murray to travel to Gatlinburg, Tennessee to capture this essence on canvas.

The Gallery

The Paul Murray Gallery consists of emotionally stirring portraits of mountain folk and farmers. Murray’s works feature real life subjects brimming with personality, such as wistful Milt from Kentucky, proud Aunt Emily, and the the rugged John Proffit. These characters truly come to life in Murray’s pastels, watercolors and pencil drawings.
